I was one of several people from WOMP driving to Columbus to attend an event, listening to WTVN on the car radio.
Perhaps because he knew I had worked there, general manager Bob Andre said “I Wish We Sounded Like WTVN,” and everyone in the car agreed. WTVN's 5000-Watt signal covered Ohio and parts of the surrounding states. WOMP's 1000-Watt signal covered Belmont County in Ohio and a few counties in West Virginia.
But sometimes you get what you wish for. Twenty years later, WOMP sounded a lot like WTVN because both stations were carrying the same hate-mongering programs featuring Rush Limbaugh and his ilk. Bob Andre was no longer the general manager. None of the people who heard his wish were still at WOMP. Many of those in the car were no longer involved with radio.
By then, radio was no longer what it had been, and I was happy to have in my rear-view mirror.
